Every January we all get emails with “Goals!” subject lines. Some of us read those and think, “Hey. Let’s calm down. I’m in hibernation mode over here.” Others of us are raring to go, ready to put some energy into shaping the new year for success. Both are valid approaches in my book! It just depends on what’s important to you.
Whether you’re hibernating or planning, there’s value in reflecting on what truly matters.
My favorite tool for this kind of reflection is a free resource called Yearly Compass. I complete it (almost) every year, though I confess sometimes March rolls around before I finish it. I’ve never regretted the time I spent looking at where my time went last year and what stood out as meaningful before thinking about the upcoming year. I use it less to choose a goal to focus on and more to surface what’s important to me in the current moment.
And that’s what meaningful goals are really about, right? What’s important to us?
Which leads me to ask: What’s important to you?
Pause for long enough to come up with a response.
Did you take into account your current context? Sometimes we give quick answers that we haven’t updated in years. This is one of the things I love about the Compass tool – it shows me clearly where I invested my energy & time last year. That process usually makes it quite clear where I’d like to focus this year.
So I’ll ask again: in light of your current relationships, career placement, physical well-being, and capacity - what’s important to you?
There’s no right answer.
There’s just taking the time to know and moving toward it.
If you’d like support in discovering what’s most important to you now, I can help through coaching.
